Technology Computer-Aided Design (TCAD) tools allow scientists and engineers to use computer simulations to model the physics of operation of computing devices. These tools play a crucial part in both the research and development of new technology and the design of new products that leverage existing technology. Global TCAD Solutions GmbH (GTS) – based in Vienna, Austria – is a leading European TCAD provider whose business focuses on: the licensing of its own commercial TCAD software; bespoke development of new models to capture cutting-edge and novel device physics and design principles; TCAD consultation; and is also a frequent participant in research activities related to semiconductor process and device simulation.

Within the ARCTIC project GTS has two primary responsibilities. The first of these is to extend the cryo-modeling capabilities of their TCAD software to consider important physical effects that though oft neglected in room temperature simulation are crucial for accurate modeling of the ultra-cold devices at the center of ARCTIC. This includes the development, validation and dissemination of new physics models but also the further development of specialized numerical algorithms intended for handling the poorly behaving numerics associated with simulation at cryogenic temperatures.

The second contribution of GTS is to lead the development of new, specialized physics model for the state and operation of a quantum computing spin qubit. This model will capture the multi-faceted physics required for true qubit simulation including the effects of: quantum confinement, correlation/entanglement, interaction with magnetic and electromagnetic fields, quantum transport, and temperature-induced strain among other effects as necessary. This model can then be used to evaluate qubit Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and thus act as a path-finding tool for qubit technology development.
